Hungry Heart

Heart racing, blood pumping, feet speeding, hunger burning. that was all I could think as I climbed onto the table, pulling and grasping at the feet of the humans as they foolishly retreated into the attic. They should have known better. They should have ran into the street. Sure, a lot of my kind were out there as well, but now they have cornered themselves, trapped like mice. Dinner.  The thought made me wince from within, though i had no control over my body nor what was happening right now. I have had to watch as my body trapped and killed humans, ripped them apart limb from limb. I have had to feel this thing's feelings, see what it saw, taste what it tasted, kill who it killed. And i couldn't stop it. My body was the zombie and i was the hostage. I pulled myself into the attic with bloody arms and hands and slowly shuffled forward in the dark. The other zombies hadn't figured out how to get in yet, but I was always the smart one. The large hunting group moaned and hissed in a choir of mindless hungry beasts. Fear trickled within my mind, yet my body felt nothing but the urge to eat. The attic was too dark for me to see anything, the humans could be anywhere. I wish I could find them and somehow tell them how to escape, how to be free and where to go. I wish I could stop myself. As my zombie-self trudged forward I let my mind slip away to before the virus, before the death, before I was this and to last December. Kyle. My dear Kyle. I remember his blonde hair as I used to run my hands through them a lot, his blue eyes that I used to stare into every day, his soft lips I used to kiss passionately every second I could and his body, pressed against mine as his arms folded over me, protecting and embracing me with his love. He was my true love, before this. I remember how he took me to see a movie on a Saturday, a lovely morning. the sun was shining its brightest and the air was cheerful. I remember how he stole a kiss on the way home, stopped at the waterfall, took my hand, knelt down and kissed it as he softly asked me to be his wife. Kyle, oh my dear Kyle, where are you? Where have you escaped to? Longing filled my heart and my mind-self burst into tears. My body heard a scurry to the left and turned to it hastily, smelling the fresh cut on the infant's leg, the wound drawing it out. I couldn't watch. I wish i didn't have to, i wish i could look away! The zombie grew closer to the silent children. The innocent children. I heard sobbing, so faint, as the rest of the mob joined me in the attic, shuffling towards the kids, following their leader. Me. I  found them. My hand grabbed a fistful of hair and the youngster screamed at the top of her lungs. I wish she hadn't. The other zombies now broke into a trot to get to their food. I looked into the child's watery, sad eyes, pulling my head back and preparing the attack that would end my hunger. She was so afraid, so innocent. Kyle, make it stop, please, I love you. As if those were the magic words, something inside me snapped, and I, I, let go of the child. My chains broke as the cage I was held in shredded and I took control again. I could bend my fingers, move my legs and my arms, I could cry, smile, touch, feel, smell. I was me again. I pushed the infant behind me as her sister scurried to me, I protected them as I faced the sea of zombies. Kyle, I'm coming for you.

This short story was invented by me, and i ask that you would please share this moment with your friends and keep the story mine. Thank you for reading it. I am 16-year old Monique, with a dream to become an author.
